New Backtesting Software and MarketClub info

It's been a while between posts but that does not mean no trading has been happening.

I have been using some new software for backtesting called Right Edge Systems. It is looking promising to allow backtesting then the ability to switch to live trading without a chage in code. This is a big plus when wanting to be fully automated.

Moving from backtesting to live trading has always been the slow point of system developement. With RE they may have looked to solve the problem. Have a look at Right Edge Systems for more info.

Also browsing the net I found a service called Market Club. It looks to have an interesting system based on a few hidden formuals. Not sure of how the whole setup works but look worth while investigating. Go to MarketClub Reviews for more info and some demo videos.

Well after 10 days of testing the new system looks to be doing OK.

This is a screen shot of the trading on a trade by trade basis.

The main difference between this and previous systems is the way it exits trades. It now takes 2/3rd's of the profit off the table at a predefined point. Once this is done the trade becomes risk free.

The other 1/3rd has a exit target and a traling stop based on ATR values.

Well after a few months of stuffing around with various systems that did not work I seam to haev foud one that looks like it has promise.

After 2 weeks it is up 8.06% with very small draw down and only 2% risk per trade.

Will have a screen shot as soon as I get the numbers complied.

Well after being on holiday for a week and managing to stuff up my code base for my program I was set back a bit.

I have since er written my program to allow better flexibiliy of implimneting new system.

I can now run multi currency, multi system , multi time frame systems on multipleone or more account.

This allows me to quickly add and remove new systems and currency pairs without needing to rewite the program. It is now all driven by an access database whihc allows for quick and easy changes.

More results will come shortly.

New Systems and New Results

I decided to scrap the old systems as they were just not performing as required.

The good news is the new systems are performing very well and looking more robust.

This is one system after 89 days with a gain of +53.76 or 0.604% per day.

And while I was there I decided to make a new system as well. So far is performing even better.

Still young, but has 60 days behind it now for a gain of +35.75%

Now that the system are working well it is time to move on to increasing the performance of them. So far I have only used 2% risk per trade. After doing some numbers it looks like I can safely push this is 3-4% while keeping the same amount of risk. This will have a huge impact on the bottom line as I would be doubling the % risk per trade. After compounding we could potentiality see +80 - 90% in the same time frame.

Now that's exciting!!!

The new money management will be dynamic and based of the win /loss ratio. The bottom end of my win /loss ratio is 44% but can increase to 55%. When I am trading at the 55% mark I want to be having a position risk of about 4%.

Results after 95 Days

Well performance is looking better. I have managed to get back to +23.57% which takes me to an average of 0.3% per day.

The chart below will show what has been going on.

I have implimented a new system as well. Based on the first but using a 15 min time frame and bigger TP's. So far the reult shave been excpetional. Making 1.89% per day for a total of 26.47%. Will it hold up? Only time will tell.

Well it has been a tough few months now... marvin has seen some hard times but is slowly coming back to profitable trading.

After 73 days I am up 7.3% It has been a hard time getting back to here after the shabby trades over the last couple of weeks.

Good news is I have a had a few big % days to make up some lost ground. With one day hitting +12.5% for the day.

May be time for a new system... I have three in progress and we will see if they prove to be worth while or not.

Well it was an interesting couple of weeks. What was a awesome month went a bit sour half way through.

I had a few connection issues and a few issues with the actual program cashing that was and still is a bit hard to track down.

This was the also the first month where the fundamental events got in the way. So the new version has a calendar built in that will take a desired action when a trade is triggered during an event.

The API will now:

Stop trading
Reverse the position
Do nothing
Half Position Size
Half and reverse position size.

Each can be set to the desired action to each account. SO far this has shown some improvement.

All in all currently making 0.25% per day. Not bad but not so good either... We will see where we go from here.

Once idea on our drawing board is to add another system that is un correlated to this system to try an smooth the equity curve a bit more.

The price did not go flat it was Oanda's servers that stoped giving prices out. Dam it...

Here is a quick snap shot of last nights trading.

4 trades in 1.5 hrs and 3 wins. I alomost interviend with these trades as it is the first time i have seen EUR/USD go flat like that. Made the right decision by leaving it alone to trade as normal.

Lesson learnt do not touch the system when it is running! If you do you think you know more and cleary I do not.

The Updated Marvin V2

Well after some twesking and more work with wealth lab I seam to be on track to finding a usable and most importantly profitable system.

The current version is traking at 0.8% per day after 19 days. At one stage it was making 1.22% per day. Now that was a dream!!! I cam back to realility 3 days later. Anyway good while it lasts.

Here is an updated screen shot of Marvin v2 after 19 days.

My win loss rate is currently at 45-55% If i can get this to 50-55% then this system will be very robust.

Time for more tweaks.

Forex API Results After 26 Days

Well after 26 days we are getting some better results. Account is now up 11.1% over 26 days. 0.42% per day. This includes weekends as well.

Results are looking better but I still need to get the SL tighter or the TP bigger. I have reworked Marvin again to use multithreading as he was missing a trade here and there over the six accounts. This made him so fast that he put on multiple trades on the one account before the server had verified the other trade... Now I need to slow him down..

I have reset ACC 1 to use a variant of the same system to push the TP out further and tighten the SL.

One change that did make a diff was the ability for him to go back to the server after the trade is entered and adjust the SL and TP. This has reduced any slippage on the entry due to delays.

Results after 15 days

Well after some massive highs Marvin has gone through some stabiliy issues and taken a few hits.

Currently sitting at +4.66% over the 15 day period. I know his weak point and it a matter of finding a way to filter the this period out. See attached graph.

Each time he has had a losing streak of 4-5 trades in a row it has been because of this one specific market condition. Now I need to find a way to filter this market condition out.

Results are with 1% risk per trade. I have also started another account using the same system but 2% risk per trades. So far seam to working well without massive draw downs.

Marvin gets a rework and makes 4.4% in 12hrs!

Well as Marvin has been trading over the last two weeks he has shown up some interesting results. The most notable being he was losing money...

I did a few tweaks and have managed to have the best night so far. He pulled a massive +4.4% in 12hrs.

I now have him trading over 6 accounts so I can get a better view of the different system performance.

Marvin version 1 is alive

Well Marvin is now up and running has been placing trades for me. The initial testing has proved to be very interesting.

The system has been split into three sub accounts for ease of reporting. Each account runs a different currency pair so I can instantly see which pair is generating money.

So far the first results have been promising with two accounts up and one down.

Last night I added the code to bomb proof him so any connection problems or the like don't cause him to crash.

Onwards and upwards....

Marvin the Prophet

Well now i have the API running and he is monitoring three currency pairs over three separate accounts.

To make it easier we gave him a name. So our API i snow called Marvin the Prophet!

If he decides not to make money then we will call him Marvin the useless...

Now I need to add the position sizing algorithms and stage two will be complete.

Back Testing - Wealth Lab

I am now n the back testing stage of development and have been using Wealth Lab to do the testing.

Yet another program language to learn...

Although initial testing has shown the system to be 79.8 accurate with a positive expectancy. :) Now that's a good thing!

Waiting for Oanda to send over a wad of data so i can go back ~12 months with the back test and get a more statistically accurate result.

If you need Oanda data just send em an email and ask. It is not that expensive and worth getting the correct result.

well after some playing with java code and the big fat book i bought i have got the jist of how Java works.

Moving from VB6 to java will not be as bad as i first thought.

Now taking the system form my head to java code will be the fun part.

After a few months of testing forex strategies I have decided to move to the Oanda API. This will give me total control over my trading and allow testing in real time.

Thinking it can be done and doing are two different things...

I have vast experince in Visual Basic 6 and database programing I just need learn Java... Time for a few books.
